1930s Timeline

American Life Histories
Manuscripts from the Federal Writers' Project, 1936-1940. During the thirties, writers were hired by the government as the Federal Arts Project, a division of the WPA. These writers interviewed thousands of Americans. Search the site by keyword or by the map. The subjects spoke about daily life, immigration, crossing the continent in covered wagons -- all important to America's earlier history.

The Hoover Dam
Damming the Colorado River was one of the major achievements of the Works Projects Administration. This site, sponsored by the University of Virginia, covers the inspiration, construction and implications of the controversial dam.

Francisco Franco (1892-1975)
A brief overview of his early life, rise to power and dictatorship subsequent to the Spanish Civil War. 11-21-06

Augusto Cesar Sandino (1895 -- 1934)
He wanted the US out of Nicaragua, and therefore was a hero to much of Latin America. Summarily executed by the Somoza, whose family ruled in Nicaragua for nearly fifty years.

Hollywood Ten
From the UC Berkeley, this site gives content, as well as links to to other sites with information about the infamous, blacklisted entertainers.

The Zoot-Suit Riots
A brief report of the zoot suit riots of 1943. The author not only discusses the impact of the fashion of the day, but of the social context surrounding the pachuco youth of the Los Angeles of the time.

Personalities

Chiang Kai Shek (1887 -- 1975)
Chiang led the Chinese to victory over the Japanese in WWII. He went on to lead China until the communists took over the country.

The leader who brought the U.S. into WWII, and who was instrumental in ending the war. 11-21-06

Adolf Hitler (1889-1945)
The Jewish Virtual Library offers this examination of Hitler's background and rise to the leadership of the Third Reich, and his election to the highest office in the Nazi Party. Not to mention the subsequent unpleasantness. 11-21-06

Benito Mussolini (1883-1945)
This is a brief overview of Mussolini's rise to power and his downfall. 11-21-06

Juan Peron (1895 -- 1974)
This article starts with the bloodless coup wresting away power in Argentina from the authoritarian government. We follow Peron's rise to power, and his subsequenst fall.

Bay of Pigs
Cuban refugees trained by the CIA, invaded Cuba in 1961. The invasion was a complete failure: all of the soldiers were either killed or taken prisoner. From the JFK Presidential Library and Museum .11-07-08

Summary of the Tonkin Gulf Crisis of August 1964, from the U.S Navy. 4-24-09

Agent Orange
A report from the Vietnam Journal, called "Residual Dioxin in Viet Nam." The author discusses the lasting effects of the wartime defoliant commonly known as Agent Orange.

The My-Lai Courts-Martial
This covers the actual massacre of the more than 500 unarmed civilians, as well as the military cover-up that followed. 05/13/04
